http://muffin.wow-womenonwriting.com

July 27, 2010 Tuesday
What type of person has two names? Spies, people in witness protection, movie stars…and writers. Amanda Lee tells us what it’s like to go through life with two personas–one writing mysteries about a cake decorator and the other writing mysteries about an embroiderer.
http://hellorhighwaterwriting.wordpress.com/

July 28, 2010 Wednesday
In her interview today, Amanda Lee (a.k.a. Gayle Trent) tells us that murder isn’t the only thing she has to research for her cozy mysteries. For The Quick and the Thread, the first book in her new embroidery series, the unlikely subject was whales!
http://www.sellingbooks.com

July 29, 2010 Thursday
Amanda Lee is stopping by Mom-e-Centric to tell us about how murder and embroidery make a wonderful mix. She’ll also be giving away a copy of The Quick and the Thread!

July 30, 2010 Friday
http://candidcanine.blogspot.com/

August 1, 2010 Sunday
Blue hair, the early bird special, embroidery. Three things grandmas like. Or are they? Amanda Lee tells us about what a fun hobby embroidery can be for all ages and about her young embroiderer who also solves murders in The Quick and the Thread.

I’m so excited! Romantic Times has named The Quick and The Thread an RT Top Pick!!! And reviewer Pat Cooper gave the book 4 1/2 stars!!! Pat says:

Site Spotlight: Curiosities 808

This site offers a tutorial for embroidered flowers that I really want to try. The flowers are made on felt and tinted with crayon. The blogger says she’s challenging herself to make this project simple and affordable. I can buy the affordable, but the project doesn’t appear simple. But, the flowers are gorgeous! I’m thinking of trying the iris.

In order to see the tutorial blog posts, use the archives to pull up June of 2008 and then follow the posts. The first one is on June 24.

Good luck!

Marcy’s Musings

Gayle received galleys for The Quick and The Thread yesterday. She sent them to Nordic Needle, Needlework Retailer and The Book Report. She’s waiting to hear back from a reviewer on another galley.

Although the galleys are tan with plain covers, and they specifically tell book reviewers these are uncorrected proofs, the books still look great. And the covers are fantastic! The picture of Angus is even carried over to the spine! He’s adorable, and I think he’ll give our book an edge over those that don’t feature darling canines on the cover.

Site Spotlight: Needlework Retailer

I’ve highlighted Nordic Needle for you before, but I haven’t introduced you to Needlework Retailer. That’s mainly because I’ve only just met them myself.

Needlework Retailer is for those of us who work in the embroidery industry. In addition to blogs, guest articles and magazine archives, the website hosts contests for displays. See the current contest and get information on entering. Who knows? You might win!

If you’re an embroidery shop owner–or even if you’re not–check out Needlework Retailer. Gayle really enjoyed the guest article ”Maximize Your Time: Achieve More with Less” by Joelle Jay, Ph.D.

(Don’t forget to send yours in!)

==========================================

10 Marketing Myths That Can Kill Your Book and Career

(And Their Remedies!)

By Carolyn Howard-Johnson

Here are excuses many authors use not to promote, killers all. Each includes advice that will help a writer salvage his book and career from wrong thinking.

* ”My book is doing well enough. My career is on an upturn. I can easily take a year off from promoting to write.”

Advice: Cut back if you must but slot in some time to keep the efforts you’ve already made at least at a simmer.

* “I hear everyone is cutting back on promotion so why shouldn’t I?”

Advice: Didn’t your mother ever ask you, “If Johnny jumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?” Look at those authors. If they’re selling lots of books, it’s because somebody (their publisher, bookstores, their publicists) is promoting them. I’ll bet, though, that most of the authors saying this aren’t selling very many. Look at your situation. If you don’t do it, who will do it for you?

* ”I like Carolyn’s Frugal Book Promoter idea so I’m going to only do things that cost no money at all.”

Advice: Hey! Frugal is one thing. Cheap is another. Some of the best things you can do cost some money. An example is American Booksellers Association Advance Access program. Find it at www.bookweb.org. Careful though. Always weigh the “rightness” of any program for your particular book.

* ”I’m gong to examine everything I’m doing and only continue what I can prove is working.”

Advice: You may not be able to prove much, if anything. That’s not the way marketing works. Judge how well your entire campaign is going only after you have given it plenty of time to work. If one thing is working well, maybe it is because your title or name is being seen elsewhere. Balance your campaign, yes. Try new things, yes. Cut back on a few only if you must. Keep in mind that book sales are not necessarily the most valid way to evaluate your promotion.

* ”Nothing I’ve tried works. I’m giving up.”

Advice. You may be on the brink. Or maybe you’ve been giving up on each aspect of your campaign too early. Any marketing plan must be many-pronged, frequent and long-term.

* ”If I cut back on promotion and find my sales slipping, I can always gear up again.”

Advice: Yikes! Good publicity and promotion build. It’s like skipping rocks on a pond. With each stone, ripples wave out, out, out. Eventually, after you’ve skipped lots and lots of stones, the results start coming back to you in waves. If you stop whipping those stones into the water, the results dissipate. It will take a long time to get enough stones dancing across the water again to match what you’ve done and, once you lose momentum, you may never get it back.

Welcome!

As you may already know, Mondays are Daphne’s designated blog days. I’ve decided, however, to give her blogs a makeover. Rather than have her post whatever comes to mind on Mondays, I’m going to have her do a bi-weekly newsletter called Killer Cakes. In Killer Cakes, Daphne will provide information about “her” series, cake decorating techniques, famous cake decorators and fabulous cakes. She’ll also preview bakeries, promote cake decorators and share recipes. If anyone has anything to share, please e-mail Gayle at gayle@gayletrent.com.

Dead Pan

Dead Pan is almost here. The book releases next month, and I’m really excited about it. Author Gayle Trent will be heading to Marion, VA to a crafts fair the weekend of the 20-22nd. If you’re in the area, please drop by to say hello. Gayle will have copies of both Dead Pan and Murder Takes the Cake on hand, and the set will be sold at a discounted price.

Other News

Murder Takes the Cake was released in a large-print hardcover edition by Thorndike on October 16, 2009. If you haven’t read this book yet, and the paperback edition isn’t in your library, this is a perfect opportunity to request your library to order a large-print copy. Some libraries have standing orders for Thorndike books, so check with your librarian to see if the library has it already.

If you’d like Gayle to speak with your group (either in person or by teleconference), please let her know by e-mailing her at gayle@gayle.trent.com.
